Taking care of your child’s teeth, even their first baby teeth, is key in preventing tooth decay. Parents are often amazed when asked if they are flossing and brushing their baby’s teeth, often responding with, “I didn’t know I was supposed too!” Brushing can begin with the gums or the first tooth and flossing should begin as soon as there are two adjacent teeth.

Brushing
There are products on the market that can make brushing your baby’s teeth and gums easier. These include baby tooth pastes, finger brushes, and little bitty tooth brushes. Chances are your baby will like the feel of the finger brush on their sensitive gums while they are teething. The finger brush is made of rubber and will have soft bristles on the end that will feel great in your baby’s mouth.

Starting early will help set precedence for your baby of brushing daily. If it is what they have been taught, and all they know, they will be more likely to do it on their own as they get older. Don’t hesitate to brush your baby’s teeth a couple of times a day.

To brush, either with a finger brush or a baby tooth brush you will use just a small amount of tooth paste and rub it up and down on your baby’s tooth. The same rules apply as when you brush your teeth.

Flossing
Flossing at an early age will establish a basis for good oral hygiene. It should be started when your baby has two teeth next to each other. Flossing can help prevent cavities which can become rampant. In very small children, this is often referred to as “bottle decay.”

When plaque is present it causes swelling, redness, and bleeding of the gum tissue known as gingivitis. As much as seventy percent of children have gingivitis. Consistent removal of plaque can cure gingivitis; however, chronic gingivitis can cause a breakdown of the structures supporting the teeth and become periodontal disease.

Remember, it is never too early to start teaching your baby about good dental health. Your baby will only have two set of teeth in his life. If you start early teaching him how to take care of his baby teeth, then he will have solid precedent to go by when his adult teeth start coming in and he is taking care of them on his own.

Is is my imagination, or these days does everyone want their child to be the brightest in the local community? People pay out all kinds of money on high tech tools created by manufacturers which claim they will make your son or daughter extremely smart and bright. This certainly sounds like a good idea. Then again, you might have mothers and fathers complaining because their youngsters are growing up too quickly. Our society can be incredibly baffling – do we want our little ones to savor their childhoods or become more intelligent from an earlier age – or is it possible to have both?

Even infant playthings are being aimed at mind stimulation. Baby toys are produced in very colorful designs to start early education. There are baby toys that speak different languages.. Should our kids at least learn their own mother tongue language first before having toys that speak multiple languages? Whatever happened to baby toys that allow babies to just be babies? A few of my favorite toys for babies are simple ones which shake and move – allowing them to giggle at as well as learn about how to make simple noises and move things about in their environment.

When my daughter was little, I was more interested on making sure that my daughter relished being a young child. Her infant playthings were adorable, soft and cuddly, vibrant as well as loud. I was not displaying flash cards from the age of 6 months or teaching her how to do simple math. I was, in fact, rolling around on the ground with her on her play mats, teaching her by pointing out pretty shapes, animals and colors. Her baby toys encouraged her to enjoy being a baby.

One of the best things that I actually purchased for her was not really a baby toy in a sense, but a video. She loved the Baby Einstein video tutorials. The background music and colors held her fascinated for the entire length of the video. While I cannot say for certain that her mind had been stimulated and she learned anything specific, I can say that it certainly wasn’t harmful to her.

For very young children, in my opinion you really can’t go wrong with purchasing baby play mats either. Baby will happily lie on his or her front for a period of ‘tummy time” and gaining strength within their core stomach muscles, which is an essential physical development exercise they all require, or on their backs more focused on having fun learning colors and sounds. No matter what toy your baby or young child is using every day, their brains are no doubt being stimulated.

Perhaps we should not be quite so focused on creating infant geniuses or prodigies. We should instead be focusing on bringing up healthy, contented as well as naturally smart children. There is no real need to be pushing for anything more than that basic concept.

Babies start to teeth at around seven months, but some babies start to teeth at around three months and others start much later, at one year old. They will start to grab at everything and bite on them, and they will also start to drool more than they usually do. Whenever the father or mother of the baby started teething when they were babies is probably the time that the baby will start to teeth.

In order to make teething more comfortable for your baby, you can buy them teething toys. This way, they will not grab at unsanitary and possibly dangerous things. Their teething will probably end at around two or three years of age, and by then they should have about twenty baby teeth.

These types of toys are available in three types. First, there are the soft toys which are meant for the first stages of your baby’s teething, before the teeth start to come out. These are usually in the form of cloth and stuffed animals. To make things more exciting for your baby, there are also squeaky teething toys.

When your baby’s gums start to become irritated, there are soothing cool toys. These are hollow and filled with sanitized water. They are put in the fridge to cool so that when your baby needs to chew on it, the coolness makes your baby’s gums more comfortable. Your baby will also be fascinated by the temperature and have fun with the toy.

The last kind of teething toys are solid baby toys for when you can see the teeth coming out already. These kinds of toys are made from soft rubber and plastics which are painted on with nontoxic paint, examples of which include teething rings.

When you choose your baby’s teething toys, you can bring your baby along to help you choose. Bright colors and shapes interest babies, so choose the ones that your baby likes the most. This way, they will have fun playing with their toy and they will not resort to picking up random and possibly harmful objects.

Baby teething toys can also serve other functions. There are rattles which have ring handles and stuffed toys with teething rings attached. Baby teething blankets are helpful as well, since they have rubber edges so that your baby can chew on them when being put to sleep. Some teething toys have built-in vibrators to massage your baby’s gums and make them feel better.

Remember to check for small parts on the teething toys. If they could get dislodged, don’t buy them. Also, clean your baby’s teething toy when it is not being used so that they do not get too dirty. When your baby has friends over, make sure that they do not get their teething toys mixed up, since your baby’s toys are meant to be your baby’s only.
